Motsomi Safaris is situated in South Africa on the southwestern corner of the Limpopo province next to Madikwe Game Reserve, bordering Botswana. They also have a lodge in the northern part of Limpopo province. Nyala Lodge is 24° 40.857’S 26° 30.242’E and Sable Lodge is 22° 32.307’S 29° 30.133’E The hunting areas range from flat open thorn veld savannah, open grassland, rocky hills and densely wooded bush. There are also rocky hills on both properties.
These properties are owned by Pieter and Ria Potgieter for 12 years. Hunting is mainly done from March to October which tends to be cool and dry. Day time temperatures will vary. Generally speaking, a warm jacket would be needed at night however during the day temperatures can reach 26°C. The summer rains start in late October & end early February.
Historically this land was cattle ranching, however, there has always been the resident game. No hunting took place there. There are no inhabitants on the land used.
Nyala Lodge is the main camp and is on 2000 hectares, Sable on 1000 hectares with an adjacent area of a further 20 000 hectares. Nyala lodge has 80 000 hectares of neighbouring concessions. All the hunting areas have a perimeter game fence and no other outfitters hunt on their property. Most of the hunting areas are malaria free.

Motsomi offers all the plains game as well as Buffalo. Leopards are also available and this area is known for its record book quality kudu. Animals are introduced to improve the gene pool and this year giraffe are going to be removed and translocated. Sometimes they do have managed hunts and end of season discounts are offered if there is a quota shortfall.

The lodge is a purpose-built luxury lodge. The lounge, bar and dining room are separate from the accommodation. All the buildings and chalets are brick with thatched roofs. All have en suite bathrooms, flush toilets, hot and cold water, constant electricity and fully air-conditioned. If there is a power failure they have a backup generator. There is also a swimming pool, a boma, satellite TV, as well as mobile phone and free Wi-Fi coverage in the Main Lodge. A maximum of 10 hunters can be accommodated at any one time.
The distance to the closest tar road is 40km. No lights can be seen and no vehicles can be heard. The nearest international airport is O.R.Tambo in Johannesburg, three & a half hours away by a vehicle. However, the closest airfield is BATAVIA which is an ex-military airfield and is a VFR, tarmac 1500 meter all weather runway approved by the Civil Aviation Authority.
All meals are inclusive of the price and all dinners are BBQ/Braai with starters and pudding. Breakfast is full English & typically the animals shot to provide the meat. All drinks and alcohol are included in the daily rate as well as packed lunches if necessary.
Seven full-time trackers are employed, who have been working for Motsomi for more than 5 years. They also have skinners and a full complement of the lodge staff.
All clients are met at the airport on arrival and dropped off on departure by Firelight Tours, and driven to the starting destination of your safari. From there they are met and taken to the lodge by Motsomi. This service plus field preparation of trophies is all included in the daily rate. The current daily rate for a one-on-one hunt is US$370 per day and a one-on-two hunt is US$300 per day. These rates have been unchanged for the last five years. Motsomi caters for bow, rifle, handgun and muzzleloader hunters on different hunting areas.

Motsomi Safaris is registered in the Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Freestate and North West provinces and Pieter is registered with PHASA, DALLAS and SCI. In excess of 100 clients were hunted last year.

Trophies are skinned, salted and stored in separate sheds made of brick, hence are very secure and 100% vermin proof. These facilities are well ventilated and have electric lighting. When dried, the trophies are stored separately and tags are used for identification. There is also an abattoir with a cold room. All the skinners have at least 7 years experience and new employees are trained if necessary. Nylstroom Taxidermy and Swift Dip are recommended, but trophies can be shipped to the clients’ own taxidermist of choice.
